Abraham Lincoln a history John 18381905 Hay 9781131135823 Books Reviews

Buyer beware although not labeled as such, this is only the first of what must have been intended as a multi-volume set. This goes from Lincoln's lineage through the early days of the Sumter crisis, prior to the inauguration.
More books have been written about Abraham Lincoln than any other president---or perhaps any human being in history--but none approach the human being and the cataclysmic period that shaped his life and forever changed America than those written by his closest confidants, John Hay (his secretary) and John Nicolay (assistant secretary).

History is much richer when viewed through the eyes of men and women who actually lived through it, biographers or historians who were alive and knew the flesh-and-blood people who transformed America or the world. Imagine, for instance, (former Chief Justice) John Marshall's Life of George Washington and William L. Sherer The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.

As powerful as those histories have proved, neither Marshall nor Sherer ever got closer to their subjects than Hay and Nicolay. These men saw and chronicled the life and times of Lincoln every day of his presidency. Up close and personal.

During their lifetime, these two men produced (originally in serial form a ten-volume opus describing Lincoln's early life and career, events leading to the Civil War--volumes one and two--and the period encompassing the war itself--volumes three through ten. The Halycon Classics book is the first two volumes.

Make no mistake about it, the Civil War was fought about slavery. Its genesis can be traced to the earliest days of the Republic and like a cancer metastasizing, it became inevitable as the young country expanded westward into new territories. For decades, political power had been in stasis with the number of slave states and the number of free states being equal but that equilibrium was shattered as new areas like Kansas sought to become territories, the Missouri Compromise was upended, and the Dred Scott decision threatened to shred the Constitution in the name of that same document. Lincoln's election may have proved to be the catalyst but the battle for America's soul was already at hand.

The first two volumes (included in the reviewed book) is essential reading for anyone interested in American history.
Well written documented commentary of Lincoln's life and impact upon our society, government and military.
I would recommend this book anyone who wants to know about what took place to help bring on the CIVIL WAR
This body of work was commissioned by Robert todd Lincoln. He felt like this biography was the only one before his death in 1926, that was the whole complete work about his father. John Hay and John Nicolay were Lincoln's personal secretaries while he was president. robert turned over all the papers he had on his father to them and collaberated with them in the writing of this body of work that was published in 1894. these works are still being referred to, in various footnotes to many good writings today such as Team Of Rivals (the movie, Lincoln, was based on this book. this set is a must for a very complete personal library on Mr. Lincoln.
this volume covers the lead-up to Lincoln's inaugural, beginning with the war with mexico more than 14 years earlier. pretty incredible reading for anyone.
Nothing to brag about.
